Chapter 8 - Cell Diversity Flashcards
Define tissue
A tissue is a group of similar cells that are adapted to carry out the same function
Name 3 types of plant tissue
Dermal
Vascular
Ground
Name 4 types of animal tissue
Connective
Muscular
Nerve
Epithelial
What is connective tissue?
Joins and supports other body structures
Cells are joined and spread out in a matrix
E.g. blood is red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets
What is nervous tissue?
Composed of nerve cells called neurons
Carry electrical impulses to ad from the brain and spinal cord
What is tissue culture?
The growth of cells in or on a sterile medium outside an organism
Name a plant organ
Xylem
What is the growth of cells within the body?
In Vivo
What is the growth of cells outside the body?
In vitro
State two applications of tissue culture
Micropropagation - growth of large numbers of plants from tissues of a plant
Skin graft - create new skin
State 2 benefits of tissue culture
Fast and inexpensive
Genetically identical
Name the tissue that produces antibodies
White blood cells
What is an organ?
A structure made of a number of tissues that work together to carry out one or more functions
Name an animal organ and describes its tissues
Heart Muscular tissue = walls Epithelial tissue = enclosing membrane Connective tissue = blood Nerve tissue = neurons
What is an organ system?
Consists of a number of organs working together to carry out one or more functions
