Chapter 27: The Lymphatic System Flashcards
what is the primary transport system?
the circulatory system
what is the secondary transport system?
the lymphatic system
whats the four functions of the lymphatic system?
a one way system that collects and returns excess tissue fluid to the blood, defend against infection, destroys micro-organisms, absorbs and digests fats
what is tissue fluid?
blood plasma forced out of capilleries - contains no red blood cells or platelets
it surrounds the cells of the body and aids transportation of substances in and out of the cell
where does tissue fluid go?
90% returns back into capilleries, rest enters lymph vessels and becomes lymph (this fluid contains large amounts of WBCs proteins and fats
what are lymph vessels?
dead ending tubes
what moves lymph around the body?
muscular walls, body movements on vessels, lymph only moves in one direction
what are the two main vessels in the lymphatic system?
thoracic duct, right lymphatic duct.
where does lymph enter back into the bloodstream?
subclavian valves
what are lymph nodes?
swellings along lymph vessels, found in clusters around the body, they form glads
give three examples of the glands formed by lymph nodes.
tonsils, groin, neck, armpit, spleen
how does the lymphatic system defend against infection?
filters micro- organisms in lymph nodes, matures and stores lymphocytes (white blood cells)
how does the lymphatic system destroy micro- organisms?
engulfs and digests them, antibody production
what gives lymph a milky appearance?
the absorption of fats
what component of blood is closely associated with the lymphatic system?
white blood cells
