Chapter 40: Vegetative Propagation Flashcards
What is vegetative propagation?
Asexual reproduction in plants
What are two features of vegetative propagation?
No variation
One parent
What are the two types of vegetative propagation?
Natural
Artificial
What are the four types of natural vegetative propagation?
Stem - runners - strawberry
Root - root tubers - dahlia
Bud - bulb - onion
Leaf - cactus
What is a plantlet?
Tiny plantlike structures that form along a leaf that root when they fall to the ground to form a new plant
What is an example of a plant that uses plantlets?
Kalanchoe
What are the four types of artificial vegetative propagation?
Cutting - remove part of plant and plant it - forms new plant
Grafting - join parts of plant from two different plants - creates variation e.g apple tree
Layering - branch of a plant touches ground and roots a new plant
Micro propagation - uses agar and growth regulators to make new plants from tiny plant pieces
What are the advantages of asexual reproduction?
Simple process
Rapid growth
What are the advantages of sexual reproduction?
Variation
Less competition
What are the disadvantages of sexual reproduction?
Complex process
Slow growth
What are the disadvantages of asexual reproduction?
Identical
Overcrowding
