Chapter 13 - Diffusion And Osmosis Flashcards
What is diffusion
Movement of molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
Give an example of diffusion
Smell perfume
cigarettes smoke
sugar in tea
Does diffusion require energy
No it is passive
What are the three types of membranes
Permeable - allows all substances through it impermeable - substances cannot pastor at semipermeable - allows some but not all substances through it (because of size)
What is osmosis
Movement of H2O molecules across a semipermeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration
Does osmosis require energy
No it is passive
Give an example of osmosis
Roots of plants
kidneys, stomach, small intestine
In an animal cell what is hypotonic solution
A solution less concentrated than the cell
cell bursts
there is more H2O outside the red blood cell than inside
In an animal cell what is an isotonic solution
In a solution with the same concentration as the cell
The amount of H2O inside the red blood cell is the same as the amount outside the cell
In an animal cell what is a hypertonic solution
In a solution more concentrated than the cell
cell shrivels
there is more water inside the red blood cell then there is outside
What do you animal cells and plant cells have in common in terms of osmosis
Plant cells and animal cells have a semipermeable cell membrane
In terms of osmosis what does the plant cell have that an animal cell does not
it is enclosed by a funny permeable cell wall which gives strength to the cell
In a plant cell what is turgor pressure
In a solution less concentrated that the cell
there is more water outside the cell than there is in it
turgor pressure is the force of the swollen cell membrane against the plant cell wall
In an animal cell what is plasmolysis
In a solution more concentrated than the cell
there is more H2O in the cell then there is outside the cell
