Chapter 7 - Skeletal System Flashcards
Functions of the skeletal system
Support, protection, movement, storage, hematopoiesis
Calcitonin
Thyroid gland hormone that increases mineralization of calcium and reduces blood calcium
Parathyroid hormone
Parathyroid hormone that decreases calcium in the bone and increases blood calcium
Hematopoiesis
Blood cell formation. Carried out in red bone marrow
Four major types of bones
Long, short, flat, irregular
Diaphysis
Shaft of a long bone. Hollow, hard, compact
Medullary cavity
Hollow area of the long bone. Contains yellow bone marrow
Epiphyses
End of the long bone. Contains red bone marrow
Articular cartilage
Thin layer of cartilage that covers the epiphysis. Small cushion
Periosteum
Strong membrane of dense fiber covering a long bone except at joint surfaces
Endosteum
Thin membrane that lines the medullary cavity
Diploe
Cancellous bone layer of a flat bone
Compact bone
Hard, dense outer layer of bone. Appears solid to the naked eye.
Cancellous bone
Porous inside of bones. Also called spongy bone. Filled with red or yellow marrow
Trabeculae
Lattice beams of the cancellous bone
Osteon
Extra cellular matrix of compact bone. Composed of calcified matrix arranged in layers like an onion.
Concentric lamella
Rings of the osteon
Central canal
Inner portion of the concentric lamella. Contains blood vessels.
