Chapter 5 - Organ Systems Flashcards
Organ
Two or more kinds of tissue and organized to perform a more complex function than one tissue.
Organ system
Group of organs that together perform a more complex function than does one organ.
Integumentary system
The skin. Largest sensory organ. Hair, nails, sweat and oil producing glands. Primary function is protection
Skeletal system
206 bones. Cartilage, ligament. Protection and supporting framework for the internal organs. Stores calcium and phosphorus.
Ligament
Fibrous connective tissue that helps hold bones together.
Joints
Connection between two or more bones.
Skeletal muscles
Voluntary muscles. Ability to contract when stimulated by conscious nerve regulation. Maintains posture and body temperature.
Tendon
Dense regular fibrous connective tissue that connects muscle to bone.
Nervous system
Brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Communication to and from body organs, integration of body functions, control of body functions, and detection of sensory stimuli.
Central nervous system
Brain and spinal cord
Cranial nerves
Extend from the brain
Spinal nerves
Extend from the spinal cord.
Peripheral nervous system.
Cranial, spinal nerves and all the branches.
Nerve impulses
Perform the functions of the nervous system. Rapid and precise control of diverse body functions. Detect stimuli.
Endocrine system
System of glands that secrete hormones into the blood. Slower but longer lasting control of body function.
