Endoscopic
Pertains to the use of an endoscope (flexible fiber optic tube with a light source and magnifying lens) to examine the interior of a hollow organ or body cavity, such as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract; used for various medical purposes
Gastroenterology
Branch of medicine concerned with disorders of the digestive system and its accessory organs
Gastroenterologist
Specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal (GI) system, which include its accessory organs, the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Not a surgeon, but may perform endoscopic procedures to remove polyps and obtain biopsies.
Alimentary canal
Aka GI Tract; aka digestive tract
Starts at the mouth, ends at the anus.
Mouth, Pharynx (throat), esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.
Upper GI tract
Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach
Lower GI tract
Small and large intestines, rectum, anus
Defecation
Body eliminates the indigestible remains after the digestive and absorption process
Accessory organs of the digestive system
Liver, gallbladder, pancreas.
Not physically involved in process, food does not pass through organs, but their secretions play important role in process.
Biopsy
Removal of a small portion of tissue from the body for microscopic examination
