Combining Form (CF)
Created when a word root is combined with a vowel.
Combining vowels: mostly “o” sometimes “i” “e”
Ex: arthr+o=arthro
Gastr+o=gastro
**links with a suffix beginning with a consonant.

Prefix
Word element attached to the beginning of a word or root word. Not all medical terms have a prefix. Usually indicates a *number *time *position *direction *negation

3 rules for building medical words
#1-word roots link a suffix that begins with a vowel. #2-a combining form (root+o) links a suffix that begins with a consonant. #3-a combining form (root+o) links to another root to form a compound word.
