Chapter 5 (Cardiovascular) Flashcards
Arteries
Large blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart.
Capillaries
Microscopic blood vessels joining arterioles and venules
Congenital
Pertaining to presence of a disorder at the time of birth, which may result from genetic or environmental causes
Metabolism
Sum of all physical and chemical changes that take place within an organism
Veins
Vessels that return deoxygenated blood to the heart.
Cardiology
Medical, surgical, and therapeutic treatments of heart diseases. Generally consists of 3 types of specialists: Cardiologists, pediatric cardiologists, and cardiac surgeons.
Cardiologist
Specializes in treating adults with cardiovascular diseases
Pediatric cardiologist
Specializes in treating infants, children, and adolescents with cardiovascular diseases.
Cardiac surgeon
Surgeon specialized in cardiovascular disease surgeries such as coronary artery bypass, angioplasty, pacemaker insertion, valve replacement/repair, heart transplants, and repairs of congenital heart diseases.
Cardiovascular (CV) System
Heart, extensive network of blood vessels [arteries, capillaries, veins]. Aka “Circulatory system”: deliver oxygen, nutrients, and other essential substances to body cells and remove waste products of cellular metabolism.
Systole
Contraction of the heart (top number of blood pressure)
Diastole
Resting period between contractions when the heart fills with blood. (Bottom number of blood pressure)
Angioplasty
Surgical procedure that opens a blocked artery by inflating a small balloon within a catheter to widen and restore blood flow in the artery.
[angi/o=vessel; -plasty=surgical repair]
