Chapter 4.3 Flashcards
Energy is
the capacity to change something, it is the ability to do work
Common forms of energy are
heat, light, sound, electrical energy, mechanical energy, and chemical energy
Cellular respiration is
the process that transfers energy from molecules such as glucose and makes it available for cellular use
ATP is
a molecule that carries energy in a form that the cell can use. It is the primary energy-carrying molecule in a cell.
Each ATP molecules consists of how many parts?
3
What parts make up ATP?
Adenine
Ribose
Three Phosphates
In A chain
What happens when an ATP molecule that loses its terminal end?
Becomes ADP molecule
ADP can be converted back into ATP
using energy released from cellular respiration to attach a third phosphate
What is phosphorylation?
When you convert ADP back into ATP
ATp is initially held in
the chemical bonds that link atoms into molecules and is released when those break bonds break
What is oxidation?
release the energy from the glucose, which is harnessed to power cellular metbolism
How much energy escapes as heat?
60%
