Chapter 2.2 (Part 8) Flashcards
Partial or complete collapse of the lung due to an accumulation of
air or fluid in the pleural space
Pneumothorax
Types
Spontaneous
Open
Tension
sudden onset of a collapsed lung without any apparent cause, such as a traumatic injury to the chest or a known lung disease.
Spontaneous
occurs when air accumulates between the chest wall and the lung as the result of an open chest wound or other physical defect.
Open Pneumothorax
air enters the
pleural space with each inspiration but
cannot escape; causes increased
intrathoracic pressure and shifting of the mediastinal contents to the unaffected side (mediastinal shift).
Tension Pneumothorax
Assessment findings
Sudden sharp pain in chest
Dyspnea
Absent breath sounds
Weak, rapid pulse
Anxiety
Diaphoresis
Diagnostic Test
Chest xray
pCo2 elevated
pH decreased
