Allergic rhinitis sometimes called
Hay fever
It is the reaction of the nasal mucosa to a specific antigen (allergen) caused by allergy to pollens from trees, flowers, or gasses.

Intervention for Allergic Rhinitis
- Adequate fluid intake
- Rest
- Warm salt water gargle
- Proper hand washing
- Keeping warm
- Give medications
- Humidifiers, mist, nebulizer
Usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection
Acute viral/bacterial rhinitis
often is used when referring to a URI that is self limited and caused by a virus.
Viral rhinitis (Common cold)
refers to an infectious, acute inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nasal cavity characterized by nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing, sore throat, and general malaise.

Nursing management of Acute Rhinitis
- Instruct pt to avoid or reduce exposure to allergens or irritants
- Pt education ragarding the use of OTC medications
- Saline nasal spray
Medical Management for acute rhinitis
- Anti-histamine
- Decongestant
- Low dose steroids therapy/intranasal
- Corticosteroids
- Antibiotics
