Cardiac Valves Flashcards
What do cardiac valves do?
They prevent the backflow of blood in the heart and ensure that blood only flows through the heart in one direction
How many cardiac valves are there?
Four
What are the two types of cardiac valves?
Semilunar
Cuspid
What are the two types of semilunar cardiac valves?
Pulmonary
Aortic
What are the two types of cuspid valves?
Tricuspid
Bicuspid
What is another name for the bicuspid valve?
Mitral
Where is the tricuspid valve situated?
Between the right atrium and the right ventricle
How many flaps does the tricuspid valve have?
Three
How are the flaps of the cuspid valves attached to the inner walls of the cardiac muscle?
By the chordae tendinae
What are chordae tendinae?
Inelastic tendons which attach to papillary muscles
What are papillary muscles?
Small protrusions on the inside wall of the ventricles
How does a cuspid valve open?
When the atrium contracts
Blood flows through
Pushes the valve open
How do the cuspid valves close?
When the ventricle contracts, blood pushes against the bottom of the flaps and closes them
What prevents the cuspid valves from being pushed back into the atrium?
The papillary muscles contract
The chordae tendinae are pulled tight
This prevents the flap from opening backwards
Where is the mitral valve situated?
In the opening between the left atrium and the left ventricle
