Narcissism
Pursuit of gratification through egotistic admiration of one’s idealised self-image
Narcissistic personality disorder
Personality disorder characterised by: feelings of self-importance, need for admiration and lack of empathy
Psychodynamic mask model
Idea that narcissism is a facade hiding negative feelings about oneself
Explicit self-esteem
Self-evaluation that doesn’t necessarily reflect how one truly feels about oneself
Social investment framework
Change in personality traits during adolescence according to one’s investment and commitment to adult roles
Causes of narcissism
Trauma; inability to regulate self-esteem; parental rejection; parental indifference; failure to embrace adult roles; type of authority of the parents; culture
