C1 M4- Overview of Classic and Matrix structures Flashcards
What is organizational structure?
Organizational structure refers to the way a company or organization is arranged, dividing and coordinating job tasks, and outlining relationships between members. It shows “who reports to who” and provides a map for communication and collaboration.
How can understanding organizational structure benefit you?
It helps determine where you fit in the organization, who to communicate with, and how often to communicate with them.
What tool is commonly used to visualize an organization’s structure?
An organizational chart (or “org chart”) is used to map out relationships between people and groups within an organization.
What is the Classic organizational structure?
A traditional, top-down system where tasks follow a chain of command, with the CEO at the top, followed by directors, managers, and then team members. Each director or manager oversees teams within specific functions like marketing, sales, or HR.
What is the project manager’s role in a Classic structure?
The project manager communicates primarily with their manager and peers working on similar projects within the same function.
What is a Matrix organizational structure?
A structure where employees have direct managers but also work across different functions or departments. Teams collaborate with stakeholders from adjacent departments or programs.
How is the Matrix structure represented?
As a grid where employees report to both their direct manager and stakeholders from other functions who influence their work.
What is the difference between Classic and Matrix structures?
Classic has a traditional top-down reporting system, while Matrix combines direct management with collaboration across departments.
How does knowing the organizational structure help during an interview?
It enables you to ask about the company’s structure and understand the role’s expectations and daily interactions.
