Bone Marrow 1 Flashcards
What is the term for the production of red blood cells?
Erythropoiesis
What is the term for the production of white blood cells (neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils)?
Granulopoiesis
What is the term for the production of platelets?
Thrombopoiesis
Where else can hematopoiesis occur other than the bone marrow, depending on the need?
The extramedullary hematopoiesis and the spleen
How does bone marrow composition change as an animal ages?
As an animal ages, there is a shift from hematopoietic tissue (red marrow) to adipose tissue (yellow marrow)
What is the colour of the bone marrow dependent on?
The ratio between hematopoietic tissue (red) and adipose tissue (yellow)
A pluripotent stem cell in the bone marrow can commit to which two lines?
Myeloid or lymphoid
True or False: Hematopoietic stem cells are capable of self-renewal
True
What is the order of lifespan of platelets, erythrocytes, and neutrophils from shortest to longest?
Neutrophils (shortest) < platelets < erythrocytes (longest)
What is a left shift?
An increase in immature (band) neutrophils in circulation
What type of injury causes hematopoietic hypoplasia?
Marrow injury (ex. bone marrow disease leading to erythroid hypoplasia then non-regenerative anemia)
What type of injury causes hematopoietic hyperplasia?
Peripheral blood injury (ex. a hemorrhage leading to erythroid hyperplasia in bone marrow, then regeneration)
What is pancytopenia? What causes this?
A deficiency of all three cellular components of the blood (red cells, white cells, and platelets). This is caused by damage to the pluripotent stem cells.
What is the diffference between hypoplasia and aplasia?
They both mean decreased proliferative activity of hematopoietic tissue but hypoplasia means production of fewer hematopoietic cells and aplasia is a failure of hematopoietic cell development
What is aplastic anemia?
A type of anemia where one or multiple blood cell lines are affected (this term is a misnomer because here aplasia means it formed completely and then something came and injured it)
