What are primary consumers?
The animals that eat the producers
What are the secondary consumers?
The animals that eat the primary consumer
What are tertiary consumers?
Animals that eat secondary consumers
What are the problems of eating plants/algae?
Cellulose is difficult to digest - have to find enough plants to eat to gain all the nutrients
How can feeding relationships be expressed?
By a food chain - producers are always on the left
What is a producer?
An organism that makes its own food usually by photosynthesis
What else can effect the prey/ predator numbers?
Prey numbers may be affected by factors other than predators:
• Weather conditions, disease, or competition affecting prey’s food supply;
• disease affecting prey;
• population balance between different types of prey for a particular predator.
