B10.2 The structure and function of the nervous system Flashcards
What neurones?
Special cells that pass along electrical impulses containing information
What are nerves?
Bundles of neurones
Where does the impulse travel ?
To the Central Nervous System along the Neurone
What is the CNS made up of?
Spinal cord and the Brain
What is the sensory neurone?
Carry impulses from your sense organ such as the receptors to the CNS
What is the job of the CNS?
It coordinates the response to the information and sends impulses out along the motor neurones
What is the motor neurone?
Sends electrical impulses from the CNS to the rest of your body
They carry out impulses to make the right bits of your body - the effectors - respond
What is the job the nervous system?
Use electrical impulses to enable you to react quickly to your surroundings and to coordinate your behaviour
How do effectors act?
Effectors may be muscles or glands. Your muscles respond to the arrival of the electrical impulses by contracting.
Your glands react by secreting chemical substances such as hormones
How does the nervous system work?
Stimulus Receptor Sensory neuron CNS Motor neuron Effector
How does the nervous system respond to a change in the environment?
Receptor detects a stimulus and sends an impulse along a sensory neurone carrying about a change in the environment to the CNS. Once all the information has been processed - the Coordinator sends impulses down motor neurones
The motor impulses stimulate the effectors to bring about the responses needed in any particular situation
