B16.2 Organisms in their environment Flashcards
What are some examples of abiotic factors in a community?
Light intensity Temperature Moisture levels Soil pH Wind intensity Availability of oxygen Availability of carbon dixoide
How does light intensity affect the environment?
Light limits photosynthesis - affects the distribution of plants and animals - some plants are adapted by having more chlorophyll or bigger leaves
How does temperature affect the environment?
It is a limiting factor for photosynthesis and therefore growth on plants. In low temperatures plants are small - affects number or herbivores in the area that can survive
How do moisture levels affect the environment?
If there is no water there will be little biological life
How does pH affect the environment?
Less nitrates and more acidic solution can kill plants
What are some examples of biotic factors affecting communities?
Availability of food
New pathogens or parasites
New predators
Interspecific competition - competition with species
How can carnivorous plants survive in areas with very low levels?
Capture and digest animals and use the nitrate ions produced as animal proteins broken down
