B13.1 Types of reproduction Flashcards
What are the different types of reproduction?
Asexual reproduciton
Sexual reproduction
How many parents do asexual reproduction need?
Only one parent
The cells divide by mitosis
Why is there no variation in the offspring of asexual reproduction?
Cells divide by mitosis - no joining of special sex cells (gametes) so there is no mixture of genetic information
Therefore no variation
What does asexual reproduction give rise to?
Genetically identical offspring known as clones
Only mitosis is involved in asexual reproduction
What is the purpose of asexual reproduction?
For growth and to replace worn-out tissues
What are some examples of organisms that undergo asexual reproduction?
Strawberries
Brambles
Daffodils
What does sexual reproduction involve?
A male sex cell and a female sex cell from 2 parents
What is the name of the item that is formed when 2 special sex cells fuse together?
A zygote
How are gametes formed?
Meiosis - chromosome number of the original cell is halved
What will the offspring in sexual reproduction have?
Genetic information for both parents - won’t be identical to the parents
Introduces variation
What are the gametes in plants?
Egg cells and pollen
What are the gametes in animals?
Egg cells and sperm
