B16.6 Adapt and survive Flashcards
What are some plant adaptions?
Need to photosynthesis to produce the glucose needed for energy and glucose - such as long roots and lots of chlorophyll
How are Epiphytes adapted?
Allow them to live high above the ground attached to other plants - collect water and nutrients from the air
How are animals adapted?
Herbivores - Have teeth for grinding up plant cells
Carnivores - Have teeth adapted for tearing flesh or crushing bones
How are some animals and plants adapted to the environment?
Animals and plants in cold environments produce a chemical that acts as an antifreeze
What are extremophiles?
Organisms that survive and reproduce in the most difficult conditions
How can bacteria live in salty environments?
Have adaptions to their cytoplasm so water does not move out of their cells into their salty environments by osmosis
What are some adaptions found in extremophiles?
- Enzymes that function in very high temperatures
- Enzymes that function at very low temperatures
- Ability to get rid of excess salt
- Ability to respire without oxygen
What is an adaption?
Features that makes it possible for organisms to survive in particular habitat - even in extreme conditions
