B14.6 Adult cell cloning Flashcards
What are the main steps involved in adult cell cloning?
Nucleus is removed from unfertilised egg
At the same time the nucleus is taken from an adult blood cell e.g a skin cell of another individual of the same species
Nucleus from adult cell inserted in empty egg cell
New egg cell given a tiny electric shock - stimulates it to start dividing to form embryo cell - contains same genetic material as original adult
Embryo develops into ball of cell and is inserted into the womb of an adult female
What was the 1st mammal to be cloned?
Dolly the sheep
What are the benefits of adult cell cloning?
Animals can be genetically modified to produce useful proteins in their milk
Can also help save animals from extinction
What are some risks of adult cell cloning?
Could lead to cloning of human babies
Cloning reduces variety in the population
What is adult cell cloning?
Production of new whole animal from cell of another adult animal
