B15.2 Theories of evolution Flashcards
What is Darwin’s theory called?
Theory of natural selection that tells us that all the species of living things have evolved from the first simple life forms
What did Lamarck propose?
Theory of acquired characteristics which said if an animal developed a characteristic over its lifetime - it would be passed onto its offspring
What are the problems of Lamarck’s theory?
Lack of evidence
People could quite clearly see the changes in their bodies such as big muscles were not passed of to their children
What led to Darwin publishing his observations
Noticed beaks had different sizes due to different diet
What is the theory of natural selection?
Individuals in a population show variation
Organism most adapted is more likely to survive and breed
Pass on characteristics to the next generation
What is evolution?
development of all species of living and extinct organisms from simple life forms
developed more than 3 billion years ago
through a process of natural selection
Why was Darwin’s publications delayed?
Pressure from Alfred Wallace
