B16.3 Distribution and abundance Flashcards
What is the is the simplest way to count the number of organisms ?
Use a quadrat - square frame laid on the ground to outline sample area
What do Quadrats mainly use?
Random measurements to determine overall picture of the population - ensures your result will reflect true distribution of the organisms
What is quantitative sampling?
Taking mean samples of the random readings
What is a transect?
A line allowing a study of a particular place
What are transects used for?
A particular section of a habitat allowing for the impact of different abiotic factors to be taken into place
How are transects placed?
Placed across areas of high/low density Quadrats placed at regular intervals Both at high and low areas Calculate mean by area/ quadrants Compare
What are the differences between quadrats and transect?
Quadrats are often used along transects, combining techniques.
Quadrats were used for random measurements to determine an overall picture of the population or distribution of organism/ variety of organisms.
Transects used for the specific study of a particular section of habitat, measuring zonal changes
