axilla Flashcards
definition of the axilla
it is a pyramid shaped space between the upper part of the arm and the side of the chest wall
it is a passage for important blood vessels, nerves and lymph vessels that travel through it to the upper limbb from the root of the neck
the axilla has
an apex
a medial wall
a lateral wall
a posterior wall
an anterior wall and a base
the apex is directed into the
root of the neck
name the borders of teh apex
posterior
anterior and medial borders
medial border of the apex
the outer border of the 1st rib
posterior border of the apex
by the upper border of scapula
anterior border of the apex
by the clavicle
the base of the axilla is formed by
skin and superficial fascia
anteriorly base description
bounded by the pectoralis major muscle
posteriorly base description
bounded by the tendons of latissmus dorsi and teres major
medially base description
the chest wall upper five ribs
the walls of teh axilla
lateral
medial
anterior
posterior
anterior wall of the axilla muscles are
pectoralis major and minor
subclavious muscle
and clavicopectoral fascia
posterior wall of the axilla muscles are
subscalpularis
teres major
latissmus dorsi
nedial wall of the axilla description
it is wide and formed by
serratus anterior muscle
intercostal muscle
upper 4-5 ribs
lateral wall of the axilla description
it is narrow and formed by the biciptal groove
coracobrachialis
and biceps brachii
contents of the axilla
cords and branches of the brachial plexus
axillary artery and its branches
axillaary vein and is tributaries
axillary fat
axillary lymph nodes
axillary lymphatic vessels
what is the neurovascular bundle
its made up of the axillary arter and three cords from the brachial plexus enclosed in aconnective tissue sheath called the axillary sheath
blood vessels in the upper limb
the arch of the aorta has a left subcalvian artery, a left coomon carotid artery and brachiocephalic ehich will later on divide into right subcalvian artery and into right common carotid artery
each subcalvian arteyr will become an axillary artyer at the level of the outer border of the first rib
axillary artyery description
begins at the outer border of the 1st rib and ends at the lower border of teres major muscle
what muscle divides the axillary artery into 3 parts?
pectoralis minor
what arethe 3 parts the axillary artery is divided to
medial
lateral
deep/posterior
describe the 1st part of the axillary artery
extends from the lateral border of the 1st rib unto the upper border of pectoralis minor muscle
describe the 2nd part of the axillary artery
lies behind the pectoralis minor muscle
describe the 3rd part of the axillary artery
extends from the lower border of pectoralis minor to the lower border of teres major muscle
what region does the branches of axillary artery supply?
the thoracic wall a nd the shoulder region
the first axillary artery branch is the
highest thoracic artery
the second axillary artery branch is the
thoracoacromial and lateral thoracic arteries
the third axillary artery branch is the
subscalpular atery
anterior and posterior circumflex humeral arteries
