Apes 4.4, 9.1, 9.2 Flashcards
Troposphere
Layer closest to earth. Temp decreases as you get farther away from surface of Earth. Where weather occurs.
Stratosphere
Layer above Troposphere. Less dense & contains ozone layer which absorbs UV-B & C radiation
Stratosphere temp
Increases as the altitude gets higher, because the upper stratosphere absorbs more radiation that converts to heat
Next three layers after stratosphere
Mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere
Unequal heating (sun angle)
Sun strikes equator at perpendicular angle while strikes polar regions at more oblique angle - heat is much more spread out for polar regions
Albedo
The percentage of incoming sunlight reflected by a surface
What Earth’s axis of rotation leads to
tilted 23.5 degrees. Latitude receives most direct rays of sun & most hours of daylight changes throughout the year as Earth orbits the sun
UV-B radiation
Harms plants’ ability to perform photosynthesis. Increases risk of skin cancer and cataracts for humans
UV-C radiation
Causes tissue & DNA damage in organisms
CFCs
Introduce chlorine, which binds to ozone & takes an oxygen atom, forming chlorine monoxide. Chlorine monoxide, then reacts w/ an oxygen atom, forming O2.
Whats causing global trend of decrease in stratospheric ozone
Increased concentration of chlorine in the atmosphere
