Apes 4.4-4.8 Quiz Flashcards
3 factors leading to atmospheric circulation
Energy from sunlight, density properties of air, rotation of earth (Coriolis effect)
What causes rain clouds
As air rises, it cools and expands, leading to water vapor condensing into rain
What causes deserts
When cool, dry air sinks and warms. This forms deserts due to lack of moisture. Happens at 30 degrees North & South
Global wind patterns
Equator to 30 degrees North and South - East to West. Westerlies (30 to 60 degrees North and South) - West to East
Watersheds
All of the land that drains into a specific body of water
3 factors that determine how watersheds drain
More vegetation = more infiltration. Greater slope = more soil erosion and runoff. More soil permeability = more infiltration & less runoff
Direct impacts of clearcutting
Soil Erosion. Increased soil & stream temp.
Insolation
amount of solar radiation (energy from sun’s rays) reaching an area
Two things solar insolation depends on
Angle (how directly strikes Earth’s surface), and amount of atmosphere sun’s rays pass through (more atmosphere and energy lost at higher latitudes)
Albedo
Proportion of light that is reflected by a surface. Surfaces with higher albedo absorb less energy
