7 Functional Groups Flashcards
1
Q
Hydroxyl group
A
-OH or -HO. Polar, forms hydrogen bonds with water to help dissolve compounds
2
Q
Carbonyl Group
A
> C = O. Compounds w/ carbonyl groups have higher melting boiling points and are more soluble in polar compounds.
3
Q
Carboxyl Group
A
– C = O
I
OH
Acts as an acid (donate H+) bc the covalent bond between hydrogen & oxygen is so polar.
4
Q
Amino Group
A
NH2. Acts as base, can pick up an H+ from the surrounding solution
5
Q
Sulfhydryl Group
A
-SH or -HS. Two -SH groups can react to stabilize protein structure.
6
Q
Methyl group
A
- CH3. Affects the expression of genes when binded to DNA or to proteins that bind to DNA.
