Analgesic/antiinflammatory Drugs Flashcards
What has analgesic and fever reducing properties but does not cause GI ulceration?
Tylenol
What is acetaminophen a trade name?
Tylenol
What happens when Tylenol is metabolized in the liver?
Produces a small portion of toxic metabolites that are quickly bound by glutathione
What does glutathione do to the Tylenol metabolites?
Renders them nontoxic
What can high doses of acetaminophen do?
Produce more toxic metabolites which can cause cellular destruction
What are adverse effects of Tylenol?
RBC hemolysis
Liver tissue damage
Methemoglobinemia
Hienz body formation
What is a toxic dose in a cat with acetaminophen?
50-60mg/jg
What is the toxic dose of Tylenol in dogs?
> 150mg/kg
What is DMSO?
Dim ethyl sulfoxide
What does DMSO do?
Inactivated superoxide radicals that cause cellular damage during the inflammation
Why is DMSO a gel?
Because it can penetrate intact skin and carry on drugs that are dissolved in it
What other analgesic/antiinflammatory drug is available as an industrial grade solvent and a medical grade solvent?
DMSO
What analgesic/antiinflammatory drugs can be used as a liquid and can be injected IV?
DMSO
What is orgotein aka?
Superoxide dismutatase
What is orgotein used for?
Used extensively to prevent damage caused by superoxide radicals during joint inflammation
