What is metastatic calcification?
A
Calcium deposits in healthy cells and tissues due to hypercalcaemia

Causes of hypercalcaemia (4)
A
- vitamin D overdose
- destruction of bone
- renal failure
- hyperparathyroidism

Which tissues are most affected by metastatic calcification?
A
tissues that secrete acid and have and internal alkaline pH : kidney, stomach, lung

Severe cases of metastatic calcification?
A
- respiratory dysfunction
- nephrocalcinosis

Why is there high calcium in renal failure?
A
phosphate is not secreted but retended so there is low serum calcium - so parathyroid produces parathromone to raise calcium levels
