A/09 Flashcards
What type of infarct is the cerebral infarct?
Liquefactive anemic
Pathogenesis of cerebral infarct (3)
1/ AS occlusion of cerebral arteries
2/ Systemic embolism
3/ Venous (sinus) thrombosis - haemorrhagic
Morphology of cerebral infarct (3)
- Encephalomalacia alba
- Encephalomalacia flava
- Encephalomalacia rubra
What is the difference with encephalomalacia rubra?
It is a haemorrhagic type of infarct
What cells will be damaged first in the brain in hypoxia?
Neurons
How long is the encephalomalacia alba?
First 48 hours
Characteristics of encephalomalacia alba (2)
- necrotic area is swollen and soft
- macrophage infiltration by day 3
Characteristics of encephalomalacia flava (2)
- liquefaction of infarct
- irregular small cavities
What causes encephalomalacia rubra? (2)
- Venous obstruction (most likely thrombus)
- Reperfusion of anaemic infarct
What is post encephalomalaciatic cyst?
Rim of gliosis around cyst, 1 month after infarct
Encephalomalacia alba is usually in which matter
White matter
Encephalomalacia rubra is usually present in which matter
In grey matter
What is a hemorrhagic infarct?
Infarction is accompanied by bleeding
What causes e. Flava?
Breakdown of lipid content
