8.3 Blood, Tissue Fluid, And Lymph Flashcards
Blood plasma
Yellow liquid in blood carrying wide variety of components including dissolved glucose and amino acids, mineral ions, hormones and large plasma proteins. Also transports erythrocytes.
Platelets
Fragments of large cells called megakaryocytes. Involved in clotting mechanism
Oncotic pressure
Tendency of water to move into blood by osmosis.
Hydrostatic pressure
As blood flows through arterioles into capillaries, its still under pressure from blood surge every time the heart contracts
Tissue fluid
Fluid filling the spaces between cells. Squeezed out of capillaries
Arterial end (of capillary)
High hydrostatic pressure of -4.6kPa, net flow of fluid out of capillary to form tissue fluid
Venous end (of capillary)
Low hydrostatic pressure of 2.3kPa. Net flow of fluid into capillary
Lymph
Some fluid (10%) does not return to capillaries, instead drains into system of tubes called lymph capillaries
Lymphocytes
Type of white blood cell that is involved in the immune system. Build up in lymph nodes
