3.6 Structure Of Proteins Flashcards
Peptides
Polymers made up of amino acids.
Protein
Consists of one of more polypeptides, complex macromolecules
Amino acid
Composed of amino group, side chain and carboxyl group
Thin layer chromatography (TLC)
Technique used to separate individual components of a mixture. Used to identify a mixture of amino acids in a solution
Primary structure
Sequence of amino acids
Secondary structure
Oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen atoms of the basic repeating structure of the amino acids interact. Alpha helices or beta sheets
Tertiary structure
Folding of protein into its final shape. Can include sections of secondary structure
Quaternary structure
Association of multiple individual proteins called subunits.
Protease
Enzymes used to catalyse the reverse reaction, turning peptides back into amino acids
Biuret test
Tests for proteins, solution turns purple in presence of proteins
