11.8 Methods Of Maintaining Biodiversity Flashcards
Conservation
Preservation and careful management of the environment and natural resources.
Ex situ & in situ conservation
Ex situ- out of the natural habitat
In situ- within the natural habitat
Sustainable development
Economic development that meets the needs of people today, without negatively impacting future generations
Controlled grazing
Only allowing livestock to graze a particular area of land for a period of time, allowing species to recover or keeping a controlled population
Succession
Natural process in which early colonising species are replaced over time until a stable mature population is achieved.
Halting succession
Process stopping further development of a habitat, may be used when an endangered species of plant/animal will not survive in a further developed habitat
Seed bank
Example of gene bank, seeds of many species are carefully stored. Created in order to be able to revive plants species if they are extinct in their wild habitat
