10.4 Evidence For Evolution Flashcards
Darwin’s Theory Of Evolution
Theory that describes the way in which organisms change over time as a result of natural selection.
Natural selection
Process whereby organisms that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to pass on their characteristics through their genetic makeup.
Palaeontology
The study of the history of life on Earth based on fossils. Is evidence for evolution as similarities and advancements can be seen in the earliest of fossils.
Fossils record
Collection of fossils documenting the history of life on Earth
Comparative anatomy
Study of similarities and differences in the anatomy of different living species.
Homologous structure
Structure that appears superficially different in different organisms, but has the same structure. Eg pentadactyl limb of vertebrates.
Divergent evolution
Describes how different species can evolve from a common ancestor. Includes different adaptive features.
Comparative biochemistry
Study of similarities and differences in proteins and other molecules that control life processes. Can help to determine evolutionary links
