8.2 Blood Vessels Flashcards
Elastic fibres
Composed of elastin. Can stretch and recoil. Provides flexibility in vessel walls
Smooth muscle
Contracts of relaxes changing lumen size
Collagen
Provides structural support to maintain shape and volume of vessel
Artery
Carries oxygenated blood to tissues except pulmonary artery which carries deoxygenated blood to lungs from heart
Artery wall
Contains elastic fibres, smooth muscle and collagen.
Arteriole
Links arteries with capillaries. Have more smooth muscle and less elastin as they have little pulse.
Vasoconstriction
Smooth muscle in artetiole contracts preventing blood flowing into capillary bed.
Vasodilation
Smooth muscle in arteriole relaxes, blood flows through capillary bed
Capillary
Microscopic blood vessel linking arterioles to venules. Forms extensive network. Narrow lumen, erythrocytes have to travel single file.
Vein
Medium sized vessel. Majority of venous system. Wide lumen. Smooth thin lining (endothelium).
Venule
Links capillary to vein. Thin walls with little smooth muscle.
One-way valve
Prevents blood from flowing in the wrong direction. Closes when backflow occurs.
