11.1 Biodiversity Flashcards
Biodiversity
Variety of living organisms present in an area
Levels of biodiversity
Habitat biodiversity.
Species biodiversity.
Genetic biodiversity.
Habitat biodiversity
Number of different habitats found within an area. Can be used to measure countries or smaller regions like a small area of countryside, including grassland, hedgerows and rivers
Species biodiversity
2 conponents: species evenness and species richness.
Species richness
Number of different species living in a particular area
Species evenness
Comparison of numbers of individuals of each species living in a community
Genetic biodiversity
Variety of genes that make up a species. Humans have ~25,000 but some flowering plants have up to 400,000.
