12.7 Preventing And Treating Disease Flashcards
Natural active immunity
Immune system produces T and B memory cells to ensure the pathogen is destroyed before symptoms are caused in the occurrence of a secondary interaction
Colostrum
First milk a mammalian mother produces, high in antibodies due to the baby not being able to produce antibodies
Natural passive immunity
First few days of birth when a baby will have high levels of immunity. Lasts until it begins to produce its own antibodies
Artificial passive immunity
Antibodies formed in one individual are extracted then injected into the blood stream of another individual
Artificial active immunity
Immune system is made to create its own antibodies in reaction to a damaged or dead version of an antigen (vaccine)
Epidemic
When a communicable disease spreads rapidly to a lot of people at a local or national level
Pandemic
When a communicable disease spreads rapidly across a number of countries or continents
Penicillin
First safe antibiotic. Originates from penicillium, a mould.
Pharmacogenomics
Science of including knowledge of drug actions with genetic material
Selective toxicity
Where antibiotics interfere with bacterial metabolism without affecting human cell metabolism
