10.7 Adaptations Flashcards
Adaptation
Characteristics that increase an organism’s likelihood of survival and reproduction. These can be anatomical, behavioural or physiological
Anatomical adaptation
Physical features internally and externally. Eg. Camouflage, teeth
Behavioural adaptation
The way an organism acts. Learnt or inherited. Eg. Seasonal behaviours such as hibernation or migration
Innate behaviour
Inherited through genes. Eg. A spider building webs
Learned behaviour
Adaptation learnt through experience or observation of other organisms. Eg. Seals using rocks to break crustaceans
Physiological adaptation
Processes that take place inside an organism. Eg. Venom production, antibiotic production
Analogous structures
Features of different species that perform the same role but have different structures
Convergent evolution
Occurs when organisms that aren’t closely related evolve similar features or behaviours
