11.5 Calculating Genetic Biodiversity Flashcards
Gene flow
When an individual migrates from one population and breeds with a member of another population alleles are transferred between two populations
Selective breeding
Artificial selection. Where a few individuals of a population are bred due to advantageous characteristics.
Genetic bottleneck
Where a small fraction of individuals of a population survive an event. Reduces the gene pool as only the surviving alleles can be passed on
Founder effect
Small number of individuals create a new colony. New gene pool is isolated and therefore small
Genetic drift
Change in frequency of an existing allele in the population due to random chance
Polymorphic gene
Gene that has multiple alleles. Opposite of polymorphic is monomorphic
