6.1 The Cell Cycle Flashcards
Cell cycle
Sequence of events that takes place in a cell, resulting in the division of the cell + the formation of two genetically identical daughter cells
Interphase
Majority of a cell spends its time in interphase, cell carries out its usual function while preparing for cell division
G1
First growth phase; proteins are synthesised, organelles replicate, cell increases in size
S (synthesis)
DNA is replicated in the nucleus
G2
2nd growth phase; cell continues to increase in size, energy stores increase, DNA checked for errors
Mitosis
Nucleus divides
Cytokinesis
Cytoplasm divides and two cells are produced
G⁰
Cell leaves the cycle, temporarily or permanently. Can be due to: differentiation, damaged DNA
Checkpoint
Control mechanism of cycle, monitor and verify whether processes have been carried out correctly
