1.4 Structure of the nervous system Flashcards
What are ependymal cells?
Produce, monitor and assist CSF circulation
What are satellite cells?
Support and exchange to Schwann cells in the PNS
What does an astrocyte do in an embryo?
In an embryo, an astrocyte regulates growth, migration and interconnection of neurones
Explain the function of all of the CNS neuraglia…
Astrocyte - protoplasmic - maintain blood brain barrier, regulate environment and generation of nerve impulses
Microglia - remove debris - form a scar
Define; commissural fibres & association fibres
Commissural fibres - connect two cerebral hemispheres
Association fibres - different parts of the same hemisphere
Name the 6 layers of the cerebral cortex
- molecular plexiform layer
- outer granular layer
- outer pyramidal layer
- inner granular layer
- inner pyramidal layer
- multiform layer
Explain each layer
- input from thalamus, pyramidal cells
- small pyramidal, stellate cells, input from cortex
- small pyramidal, commissural fibres
- large pyramidal, INPUT FROM THALAMUS
- large pyramidal, INPUT FROM CORTEX
- fusiform cells, output from thalamus
Which two are the main layers?
Layer 4 - main sensory
Layer 5 - main motor
Name the three types of cortex and the number of layers they have
Neocortex - 6 layers
Paleocortex - no layers - olfactory cortex
Archicortex - 3 layers - hippocampus
What is the difference between agranular and hypergranular?
Agranular - motor
Hypergranular - sensory
What is Brdomann’s area 1,2,3?
Primary sensory cortex
