1.1 Intro to TSM Flashcards
What forms myelin sheath in the PNS?
Schwann cells
What determines the speed of an axon?
Diameter and myelination
What does the post-synaptic density contain?
Contains receptors
What does an astrocyte do?
Supports, cleans up and provides structural support
What do microglial cells do?
Immune cells, monitor CNS environment
What do oligodendrocytes do?
Myelinating cells of CNS axons
What does grey matter contain?
Cell bodies, astroglia and microglia
What does white matter contain?
Myelinated axons, oligodendrocytes and microglia
What is a colliculus?
Small swellings on the roof of the midbrain involved in vision and hearing
What is a ganglia?
Autonomic nervous system - a collection of cell bodies
What forms the diencephalon?
Thalamus and hypothalamus
Which part of the brain is the oldest and what is its function?
Pons and medulla - homeostasis - HR, resps etc…
What makes up the posterior and anterior midbrain?
Anterior - tegmentum
Posterior - tectum
