10 Nervous System Vocab Flashcards
cerebrum fxn
thinking, personality, sensations, movements, memory
thalamus fxn
relay station (triage center) for sensory impulses- control of awareness and consciousness
hypothalamus fxn
body temp, sleep, appetite, emotions, control of pituitary gland
cerebellum fxn
coordination of voluntary movements and balance
pons fxn
connection of nerves (to the eyes and face)
medulla oblongata fxn
nerve fibers cross over, left to right and right to left; contains centers to regulate heart, blood vessels, and respiratory system
afferent nerve
carries messages towards the brain and spinal cord (sensory nerves)
astrocyte
glial cell that transports water and salts from capillaries
ANS autonomic
nerves that control involuntary body functions of muscles, glands, and internal organs
CNS
central nervous system- brain and spinal cord
cerebellum
coordinates muscle movements and maintains balance
cerebral cortex
outer region of the cerebrum, containing sheets of nerve cells, gray matter of the brain
cerebrum
largest part of the brain; voluntary muscle activity, vision, speech, taste, hearing, thought, and memory
efferent nerve
carries message away from the brain and spinal cord (motor nerve)
ependymal cell
glial cell that lines membranes within the brain and spinal cord and helps form CSF
glial cell/neuroglial cell
supportive and connective nerve cell that does not carry nervouse impulses
ganglion
collection of nerve cell bodies in the PNS
gyrus/gyri
sheet of nerve cells that produces a rounded ridge on the surface of the cerebral cortex
hypothalamus
portion of the brain beneath the thalamus; controls sleep, appetite, body temperature, and secretions from the pituitary
medulla oblongota
controls breathing, HR, dilation of vessels, nerve fibers cross over here
microglial cell
phagocytic glial cell that removes waste products from the CNS
oligodendroglial cell
glial cell that forms the myelin sheath covering axons
parasympathetic nerves
involuntary, autonomic nerves that regulate normal body functions such as heart rate, breathing, and muscles of the gi tract
parenchyma
essential tissue or organ of a system
stroma
connective and supporting tissue of an organ
sympathetic nerves
autonomic nerves that influence bodily functions involuntarily in times of stress
thalamus
main relay center of the brain, conducts impulses between the spinal cord and the cerebrum
vagus nerve
cranial nerve 10, only spinal nerve to leave head
