Youth sports Flashcards
Major motive for sport participation
In youth; fun is the top reason. It develops strong intrinsic motivation and is correlated to task goal orientation and continued participation
Relative age effect
Differences found in competence in youth sports teams showed that the majority of the best performers were born in the beginning of the season. Due to the rapid maturing and experience.
Competence motivation theory
perception of competence and control is what stimulate participating in sport. It enhances motivation if it is accompenied w enjoyment and pride.
BUT if perceived competence is low or externally attibuted, it can lead to anxiety and sport drop out.
SDT (self-det. th)
The three needs (competence, experience relatedness and have sense of autonomy)
Found evidence that young athletes who fulfilled these needs shows lower dropout rates .
Expectancy value model
been used to explain youth dropout. Emphasis on achievement motivation; the higher the expectation for succes, the greater the subjective value, the greater the motivation.
Thoery of planned behaviour
PErson’s intentions are best predictors of his/her behaviour. Key elements are perceived behavioural control and attitudes toward the activity
Leisure constraints theory
Intrapersonal (internal attributes like competence)
Interpersonal (social fa ctors eg friensd
Structural (external factors,eg trransport issues.
Intra and interpersonal were more linked to droupout than structural.
