Competence motivation theory
Innate motivation to be competent in sport coming from attempts of mastery.
Successful attempts;
- Promote self-efficacy, positive feelings
- Increases competence motivation (so acts as cycle)
Failed attempts;
- Perceived failure, negative affect and low competence motivation
- results in dropout
Perceived competence
Plays a big role in sports dropout; if underestimated, they tend to drop out, with girls creating anxiety for challenges. (boys less damaging)
Those who accurately asses seek involvement
Best response to poor performance
Supportive silence, technical info is counter-productive if given after poor perf. Only in good performance.
Reflected appraisal process
a function of actual appraisal of others, one’s own appraisal of self, and one’s perception of how others appraise. them.
Reflective appraisal of significant others is predictive of the athlete’s perceived competence
