Talent Flashcards
Genetic better-faster effect
Deliberate practice is directly enhanced by genetic factor. Serves as moderator
Genetic more-bang-for-the-buck
The effects of physical abilities and psychological traits directly effecting athletic perf.
Difficulty defining talent
No clear indicators, could be result of practice; no way to tell the difference
Theories;
- Talent = better than the rest
- Talent = collection of innate abilities
- Talent = Learning faster than others
- Talent doesn’t exist, just superior reproducible performance
DNA influence + 4 reasons why talent is overrated
DNA is not the blueprint to behaviour, lot of noise.
Multiple characteristics are needed for success.
- Nobody knows the ideal mix of traits you need (compensation is also possible if you miss one)
- Training is a. much stronger predictor of performance level than talent
- Just being talented isn’t worth much without motivation, persistence and interest
- Many promising talents never reach potential
Experts vs Expert performers
Experts are called that based on social representation and knowledge on a subject. It’s better to look at performance as that’s a more clear indication of how it is now. Eg doctors who just graduated perform better than older, and human performance evolves
Ericsson: Assessment of experts should be based on perf.
