Two orientations
Performance orientation; Comparing yourself to others, demonstrate your skills.
- Problematic in case you lose, leads to frustration and loss of motivation
- Ego orientation, succes is winning
Task orientation; Aim to master skills. Comparison with own performance. less fear of failure an higher lefvel of competence.
- Develop, higher satisfaction/enjoyment
- succes = improving
Three levels of achievement goals
Situational level (state)
Disposition to pursue type of goal (trait)
Characteristic of the environment /group;
mastery climate;
- Reward for effort, hard work pays of
- Cooperation is valued, focus on learning
Performance climate
- Competition is encouraged, mistakes punished.
Approach vs avoidance
Mastery approach; Best one, drive to develop, understand and devote time
Performance approach; Highly competitive, comparison w others
Mastery avoidant; Highly perfectionistic, performance anxiety
Performance avoidance; Procrastination, self-defeating behaviour
TARGET intervention
Task design: Variety, novelty, challenge, meaning
Authority; Decision making, enable participation
Reward/recognition; reinforce and encourage
Grouping: Flexible grouping arrangement, mixed
Evaluation’ Explicit and frequent info about progress
Time: Task should provide time to give sound instructions, completion.
