Psychological momentum Flashcards
Psychological momentum
Seen as self-confidence topic;
a positive or negative change in cognition, affect, physiology and behaviour caused by a (series of) event(s) resulting in commensurate shirt in performance and outcome
Key elements
Precipitating event leading to the momentum chain (confidence triggers)
Experience of athletes involved (both team and opponent)
Antecedents-consequences model (1 of 3)
- Situational(!) antecedent (EG slam dunk) precipitates perception of momentum; results in confidence/motivation/energy increase.
The situation (importance of the game, audience response, skill level of performers etc.) all play a roll in facilitating/dampening the enhancement as consequence of momentum
Multidimensional model (2/3)
- Momentum is either pos or neg
- Key element is the precipitating event leading to chain
- Chain causes change in cognition, affect, arousal, followed by change in behaviour, performance and outcome.
- Two variables that moderate: Experience of performers on the momentum team and opponent factors.
Projected performance model (3/3)
Hypothesizes momentum has little effect on performance. Simply result of extremely good/bad performance.
“Over the course of contest, teams cycle through pos/neg phases but there’s no cause-effect rela
(not supported, studies in favour of model 1&2)
Hot-hand phenomenon
Belief that performance temporarily improves after string of succes.
Somewhat supported, if player also believes they have the ‘hot hand’, self-confidence increases.
