Cohesion
Dynamic and social process which is reflected in the tendency of a group to stick together and remain united in the persuit of goals and objectives
Task vs social cohesion
Task; Work well together during practice and competitions (stronger relationship w performa nce)
Social: spend time together outside of practice/genuinely like eachother.
Directional; increase in performance = increase in cohesion, increase in cohesion…
4 types of team cohesion
Integration - task; Perception about how well players have bonded over attempts to pursue goals.
Integration - social; Athletes’ views regarding how well players relate to each other and enjoy being part of the team
Attraction - task: Extent that players are commited to the goals
Attraction - social : Degree to which player enjoys company of teammates.
Measuring cohesion
Direct: survey, questionnaire etc.
Indirect; sociogram (social network analysis)
The density shows the ties in the group
Moderaters of cohesion:
- Females have stronger relation w cohesion and performance in teams
- Subjective rating leads to stronger relationship
Team socialization
Ways in which teams integrate new members and process by which an individual acquires the social knowledge and skills necessary to assume an organizational role.

Social inclusionary
Tactics lead to better team cohesion to create social identity. Knowing that you’re a member of a group as well as the features of the group./
Contextual factors
Team size: increase is decrease in cohesion
Level of competition: Vice versa.
Athlete factors
Similarity, satisfaction and adherence. Higher is higher cohesion
Team factors
collective efficacy; groups shared belief in combined resources to undertake actions.
